Exhibition description:

Historically Speaking…

Are my crocheted doilies art?

Growing up, I watched my grandmothers crochet countless supply of doilies. Endless hours were poured into these family heirlooms, which require an amazing amount of skill, technique and endurance, very similar to an art practice. They are hard to do and they are definitely not defined as art in the gallery sense.

The purpose and function of the doily is debated, just like art. Don’t get me wrong; I love the world of art. Its role to question current politics and human behavior is essential in encouraging the world community to grow, develop and improve. A world without art is not one I want to be included in. Advancements in science technologies keep us alive and living longer, but art and culture is the reason we want to be here in the first place.

I’m simply questioning the Canon of Art. I question the definition of art and who defines the categories, and subsequently, the main players. When does something become art? How important is art school or being influenced by the Masters? Admittedly, I have never been to the European galleries and my main influences during my formative years were my grandmothers and their humble practice of crocheting. So, where does this leave my artwork?

I wonder, historically speaking, if crocheting had been a masculine hobby, would the world’s galleries be hung with doilies today? Something to consider…
